What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium fixture placed in the jawbone to replace a tooth root. As it heals, the surrounding bone bonds to it, creating a foundation for replacement teeth.
Implants can support an individual crown, a bridge replacing several teeth, or a denture. The number and position of the implants depend on the teeth being replaced, the available bone and the type of restoration planned.
At Martin J Kenyon Dental Surgeons, Mr Peter Kenyon provides carefully planned implant treatment, combining advanced postgraduate training with attention to the appearance and function of your finished teeth.
Why consider dental implants?
For many people, the appeal is simple: teeth that feel secure and allow them to get on with everyday life more comfortably.
Eat more comfortably.
Implants can provide stable support for replacement teeth, helping with biting and chewing.
Feel more confident in your smile.
Your replacement teeth are individually designed, with attention to their shape, colour and how they suit your face.
Reduce movement and uncertainty.
Depending on your needs, implants can support fixed teeth or help hold a removable denture more securely.
Avoid relying on neighbouring teeth.
When replacing gaps, implants can support the new teeth without requiring adjacent teeth to be filed down for a conventional bridge.

From planning to your new teeth
What does treatment involve?
A consultation and clear plan.
Peter will listen to your priorities, assess your teeth and gums, and discuss suitable options. X-rays and, where appropriate, a 3D scan help with planning. You will receive a written treatment plan and costs before deciding whether to proceed.
Placing the implants.
Implants are usually placed under local anaesthetic. If additional bone is needed, a graft may be recommended before or at the same time as placement.
Time to heal.
The implants are given time to bond with the bone. Treatment usually takes several months, and grafting can extend this. We will explain your expected timetable and discuss options for temporary teeth during treatment.
Fitting your new teeth.
Once the implants are ready, your final crown, bridge or implant denture is made and fitted, with attention to appearance, comfort and your bite. We will show you how to look after your new teeth and the implants supporting them.
Your questions answered
Recently had a tooth or several teeth removed?
You can ask about implants while the area is healing. We will assess your mouth and advise when treatment would be appropriate; the best timing varies between patients.
If you are due to have teeth removed, let your dentist know that you are considering implants so this can be taken into account when planning your care.
If your teeth have been missing for some time, implants may still be possible. We will assess the available bone and whether any additional treatment is needed.
Is implant treatment painful?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during placement. Some soreness, swelling or bruising afterwards is normal. We will explain suitable pain relief and aftercare, and what to do if you have any concerns.
Could I be suitable?
Suitability depends on your general health, medicines, gum health and the amount of bone available. Smoking and a history of gum disease can increase the risk of complications. Any active dental disease needs to be addressed as part of planning.
If you have lost bone, this does not automatically rule out an implant: grafting may be possible. Your assessment will establish what is realistic for you.
How long do implants last?
With appropriate care, implants can support replacement teeth for many years. They need daily cleaning and regular professional reviews. Crowns, bridges, dentures and their components may eventually need repair or replacement; denture attachments can also wear and need maintenance.
Implant treatment is not guaranteed. An implant can fail to bond with the bone, and inflammation or infection can damage the supporting tissues later. Other risks depend on the implant site and procedure. Peter will explain the relevant risks and likely outlook for your individual treatment before you decide.
What are the alternatives?
Depending on your mouth, alternatives may include bridges supported by natural teeth, conventional removable dentures or accepting existing gaps. Not every missing tooth needs replacing. We will explain the advantages and limitations of the suitable options so you can make an informed choice.
What does treatment cost?
Single tooth guide price
From £2,800
One implant, including the final crown
The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the number of implants needed and whether your new teeth will be fixed or removable.
As a guide, a single dental implant, including the final crown, starts from £2,800. Replacing several teeth or a full arch requires an individual treatment plan and quotation; it is not simply a single-tooth price multiplied by the number of missing teeth.
Treatment is provided privately. Your individual quotation will explain the total cost, including any scans, grafting or other treatment required. We will also explain the ongoing care your implants and replacement teeth will need.
